Description

Scarce document signed by the first Stuart King of England

First Stuart King of England (1603 - 25), also King of Scots (1567 - 1625). On his mother's forced abdication, he was proclaimed king, and brought up by several regents. When he began to govern for himself, he ruled through his favorites, which caused a rebellion and a period of imprisonment. On Elizabeth's death, he ascended the English throne as great-grandson of James IV's English wife, Margaret Tudor. At first well received, his favoritism again brought him unpopularity. DS, in Lowland Scottish, signed “James R,” one page, 7.5 x 9, October 18, 1607. James instructs his Comptroller “We do hereby command you to make payment to Mr. Patrick Galloway of suche allowance both of wyne & money as in former yeiris Indureing the time of our stay in that our kingdome was assigned to the said Mr. Patrick.” Cloth matted and framed with a portrait of James, to an overall size of 15.5 x 26. Accompanied by a transcript of the document, as well as analysis from British researcher J. L. M. Gulley. In very good condition, with several folds and heavy overall foxing to page. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA. Oversized.
