Mitchell won the Pulitzer Prize for her first and only novel, Gone With the Wind (published 1936). She died at the age of 48 after being hit by an automobile. The best-selling Civil War romance was later turned into one of the most famous movies of the era, with Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh in the roles of Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara. The film won the 1939 Academy Award for Best Picture, plus seven other OscarsTLS, one page, 7 x 11, Atlanta, Georgia letterhead, December 4, 1936. In full: “Dear Mr. Baker, Thank you so much for your letter and the many nice things you said about ‘Gone With The Wind.’ I appreciated them all, for, of course, I am like all other writers.
