President Lincoln appoints a Chaplain to the United States Hospital at Philadelphia

DS as president, one page, 7.5 x 10, October 19, 1863. President Lincoln appoints “Alexander Shiras of Pennsylvania has been, and is hereby appointed Chaplain of the United States Hospital at Philadelphia, Pa., with authority to do and discharge the duties of that office during the pleasure of the President of the United States for the time being.” Signed at the conclusion in black ink “Abraham Lincoln,” and countersigned by acting Secretary of War Hardie. Archivally suede matted and framed with a portrait of Lincoln, to an overall size of 22 x 18. In fine condition, two horizontal mailing folds, one through tops of several letters of Lincoln’s signature, an even shade of overall toning, some light creasing and a touch of light soiling.
