Grant writes a letter of introduction for a political friend, attempting to make certain ‘arrangements’ on his befalf, as long as it costs Grant nothing. In full, “This will introduce Mr. Wm. B. Hinsmen, of New York City, a politician who I owe something to, and who I may have to do something for. I can think of nothing better to offer him than your place, which, if he accepts, will entirely satisfy him in all his economical ways without his calling for a part of my salary as his predecessor has done. The place was promised to G. H. Coleman if he wanted it; but as I have heard nothing from him since he inspected it. I regard myself absolved from the promise. Show off the beauties of your position to the best advantage for I must make a change soon and if the place goes begging to bring me, no one will have it but you, Sanford or Kliburg, Chittain might.” In fine condition, with expected folds, one between the two initials of signature.
