Description

Washington signed address panel to his stepson, John Parke Custis, a relative of Robert E. Lee

Address panel, 6 x 3, addressed in Washington’s hand to “John Parke Custis Esq., Near Alexandria, Virginia,” and signed in the lower left “G. Washington.” Date, written in another hand, on flap on reverse reads “September 24, 1777,” above a red wax seal remnant. When George and Martha Washington were married in 1759, Washington took Martha and her family, John Parke Custis and Martha Parke Custis, to his Mount Vernon estate. They had no children of their own, but John Parke Custis had four, and after John's death Washington adopted the youngest two, Eleanor Parke Custis and George Washington Parke Custis, whose daughter married Robert E. Lee. In very good condition, with some scattered mild toning and soiling, light edge wear and some tape repairs to excess side flaps. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
