Washington approves payment to a blacksmith

DS, signed “G. Washington,” one page both sides, 7 x 6, August 1786. Document reads, “Shepherds Town 6, Feb'y 1786. Mr James Rumsey for Potomack Comp. Is to send. D. To Philip Striden for working into tools 951 iron @ 4 15.17.0 to Conrad Buyers for working into tools 295 Iron 4 - 4.18.4 To Mich'l. Enlee for working into tools 248 Iron 4.2.8. To John Unsill for working into tools 699 Iron 15.13-0 Penna. currency L36.55-0 I have had the above work done. James Rumsey." One the reverse is a statement approving the bill which reads, "March 21st 1786 Rec'd. Philip Striden Blacksmith. The within content of Mr. William Harthorn. The within amt. Allowed 5, Aug. 1786. G. Washington." Also signed by John Fitzgerald and George Gilpin. In fine condition, with writing from opposing sides showing through. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
