Eccentric king of Bavaria, 1864-86, whose extravagant arts patronage and penchant for exquisite palaces (one of which, the Neuschwanstein, was the model for Cinderella’s castle at Disneyland), nearly drained the royal treasury before he finally succumbed to insanity. DS, in German, signed “Ludwig,” one page, 8.25 x 13.5, May 20, 1866. Commission promoting Sergeant Friedrich Cantzler to the rank of Second Lieutenant, signed at the conclusion by Ludwig and counter-signed by Prime Minister Johann von Lutz.
