Description

LS signed 'M. Van Buren,' three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 12, November 30, 1829. Van Buren attempts to handle a sticky situation involving an international debt. In part, 'I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of the communication...in relation to a debt stated by Mrs. Maria Larrard y Sarmiento, widow and representative of Don Pedro Larrard to be due from Mr. Thomas Brent...I will take an early opportunity of Transmitting to Mr. Brent a copy of the communication with which you have thus honored me, and of requiring from him such explanations upon the subject as he may have in his power to offer for his own justification, and I flatter myself that these will prove entirely satisfactory. In the meantime, I have the honor to state that the Executive Government of the United States has no authority to assume, at this time, or prospectively, the payment of the debt in question, which appears to be founded upon an old private mercantile transaction between the parties concerned in it.' Cloth matted and framed, so that all three pages are visible on both sides and a portrait of Van Buren, to an overall size of 23 x 17. In fine condition, with some light show through from writing on reverse. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
