Free franked envelope panel, 4.5 x 3.25, addressed in Jefferson's hand to 'Genl. William Duane, Philadelphia,' boldly franked in the upper left corner 'Free Th: Jefferson.' Light red postmark reads 'Charlottesville, July 5.' Duane was appointed a Lt. Colonel by Jefferson in 1805 and served as Adjutant General during the war of 1812. Suede matted and framed with an oval portrait of Jefferson to an overall size of 9.25 x 15.75. In fine condition, with a bisecting vertical fold and some scattered light spotting and toning.
