Reclusive chess grand master who scored a Cold War triumph by defeating Russian world champion Boris Spassky in a 1972 competition. Russian chess magazine, dated 1959, signed on the first inside page in blue ballpoint, 'Bobby Fischer, Zurich, May 1959.' Fischer was in Zurich in May of 1959 for a competition in which he placed third, at the age of only sixteen.
