Description

Feodore Chaliapin

The foremost Russian bass of his era. He was born near Kazan in 1873, and was at first self-taught. After singing with provincial companies he studied at Tbilisi, subsequently singing in St. Petersburg in 1894 and joining the Russian Imperial Troupe in 1895. Appearances with them and in Paris, New York and London established his fame. After the First World War he was not allowed by the Soviet Government to leave Russia until 1921, after which he settled in England and continued to make appearances in the world's leading opera houses until his death in Paris in 1938. Lot of three items: an original vintage signed ink sketch of a profile of a satanic figure on an off-white 13 x 5.5 sheet folded to 6.5 x 5.5. Signed 'F. Chaliapin, Souvenir, [?] 1926 [?]', a 7.5 x 10 page from a programme, signed 'Feodore Chaliapine, 1926' in fountain pen; and, a matte-finish 3.5 x 5.5 postcard portrait with several handwritten lines on the reverse. In overall fine condition, with expected age an handling wear to the programme page, a small repaired tear to the lower left corner of the sketch and two small pin holes to the top border of the photo postcard.
