Description

George Washington boldly signs a complete oversized payroll list for workers at Shenandoah Falls for the Potomac Company

DS, one page, 14 x 10, August 5, 1786. Document listing men that worked at Shenandoah Falls under Jacob Hackney, overseer, from September 9th, 1785 to the 24th, inclusive. The document lists names, occupations, wages, etc. Some of the occupations are 'rock blower,' 'borer per inch,' 'cook,' and "laborer.' It is well-known that many slaves worked on this project and it is very possible that some of the laborers, especially "William Freeman" were slaves. Signed on the reverse in black ink 'G. Washington,' and countersigned by four other people, including Washington's partners in the Potomac Company. Some professional restoration to folds of document, including one directly above and below Washington's signature, some scattered mild toning and all writing clear and legible, otherwise fine condition. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
