Description

Military endorsement signed by Little Big Horn survivor Frederick Benteen

Army officer, best known for having served in Custer's 7th Cavalry as Commander of Companies D, H, K, at the Little Big Horn in 1876. He received Custer's last message, but was spared involvement in the massacre because at the time he was ordered to scout well away from the area of the expected action. Mrs. Custer blamed Benteen for her husband's fate, intimating that due to the rumor of his dislike of Custer he indirectly was responsible for Custer's massacre. It was Benteen who first came upon Custer's battalion and assumed the task of burying the dead. Signed endorsement, removed from a military requisition, 7.5 x 2, for 'Four (4) shoeing rasps,' boldly signed 'F. W. Benteen.' Accompanied by top portion of printed form indicating the location as Ft. Rice, Dakota Territory, dated April 3, 1878.' In fine condition, with a light shade of toning and a touch of minor soiling and tape remnants to top portion of form. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
