In 1774, he was chosen to be a member of the provincial council during the crisis in Boston. He was then appointed as a representative to the Continental Congress, where he was most noted for his oratory skills, and as a passionate advocate of independence from Britain. In 1776, as a delegate to the Continental Congress, he signed the Declaration of Independence. DS, one page, 15.75 x 12.75, Commonwealth of Massachusetts letterhead, July 31, 1794. Document signed as Governor of Massachusetts, appointing Abel Chapin 'Lieutenant Colonel of the First Regiment of the First Brigade Fourth Division of this Commonwealth.' Signed by Adams on the left side under the seal. In very good condition, with some minor paper loss along horizontal folds, tape reinforcement to separations and document folds on reverse, scattered light toning and a clear bold signature.
