Description

Beginning in 1774 he attended the Continental Congress where he served on the national council throughout the Revolutionary War. He also served on the committee to draw up the Articles of Confederation, was commissioned a colonel in the New Jersey militia, and served as President of the newly independent Delaware. In 1777, still serving in the Congress under the articles of Confederation, he was appointed Chief Justice of Pennsylvania, an office that he held for nearly twenty years. DS, signed 'Tho. McKean,' one page, 21 x 12 vellum, Commonwealth of Virginia letterhead, August 18, 1792. Governor McKean A grant for 1099 acres of land in Potter County, called Doncafter, made out to Thomas M. Willing, signed in the upper left corner, 'Tho. McKean,' above the star-shaped wafer seal. In fine condition, with heavy folds, light edge soiling and some light wrinkling to portion of signature.
