Description

Signer of the Declaration of Independence; founder and president of the Bank of Philadelphia. ALS signed 'G. C.,' two pages both sides, 7 x 9.25, June 28, 1783. Letter to an unidentified gentleman. In part, 'The last time I saw Mr. M. he told me he expected arrival of some wines which near five years ago we had requested your house at Madeira would send in in the event of a peace, which as we thought could not be far distant - you see how fallacious that idea was...I wrote yesterday that I had no thoughts, except upon Mr. Tayler's affairs of going to Philada, but on second thought, I believe I must go there soon upon other business...I shall then have a chance of some of your fine fruits, which has had here several encomiasts.' In very good condition, with scattered foxing and soiling, portions of text a bit light but legible and a fold through center of initials. COA John Reznikoff/University Archives and RRAuction COA.
