Baltimore lawyer who was inspired to write The Star Spangled Banner after he witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British in 1814. DS, signed 'F. S. Key for Pet.,' one page, 5.5 x 8.25, August 15, 1805. Legal document, written entirely in Key's hand, seeking to overturn a judgement against his father. In part, 'The petition of John Ross Key humbly and herewith that a judgement was rendered against him and in favor of a certain Isaac Shaw...in the year 1805...pray an appeal to your Honors and seeks other relief.' Key also dockets the reverse, 'Mr. Ritchie, File this and fill up the blanks by the Jud't, Yours, F. S. Key.' In fine condition, with light toning, uneven right edge and a few spots.
