Description

Alfred Dreyfus

French Jewish army officer, he was falsely charged with delivering defense secrets to the Germans. The efforts of his wife and friends to prove him innocent provoked a vigorous response from militarists and anti-Semites. After the case was tried again, he was found guilty but pardoned, and in 1906 the verdict was reversed. Proof of his innocence came when German military documents were uncovered in 1930. ALS in French, signed 'A. Dreyfus,' one page, 4.5 x 6.5, March 6, 1908. Letter to a friend. In part, 'We wrote to you, about a week ago...to request the pleasure of your company for a dinner at our house...we have not heard from you and we wonder if out note ever reached you. in any event, we hope to have you among us.' In fine condition, with a light shade of uniform overall toning, a few wrinkles and trivial edge wear. COA John Reznikoff/University Archives and RRAuction COA.
