Description

Assassin of James Garfield. Scarce ALS, one page, 8 x 10, May 24, 1878. Four years before Garfields's assassination, Guiteau requests 200 books and complains of hard times. In full: 'I presume you have rec'd the 5 I paid for those books by this time. Please send me to Buffalo New York without delay 200 books C.O.D. 10 (which is all I have now). Times are hard and I do the best I can. Will notify you shortly where to send the balance C.O.D. Send 200 which is 5 per hundred, as I can't afford to pay so much for express charges. I had to pay 6.50 to get those 50 you sent me to Albany and do not wish to pay so much express charges hereafter. Yours very truly, Charles J. Guiteau.' A small hole in the center of the page and minor tearing to one of the folds does not affect the boldly penned signature. The letter has been professionally silked on the reverse and is in overall very good condition. RRAuction COA.
