Description

Scarce document signed by the first Stuart king of England

First Stuart King of England (1603-25), also King of Scots (1567-1625). On his mother's forced abdication, he was proclaimed king, and brought up by several regents. When he began to govern for himself, he ruled through his favorites, which caused a rebellion and a period of imprisonment. On Elizabeth's death, he ascended the English throne as great-grandson of James IV's English wife, Margaret Tudor. At first well received, his favoritism again brought him unpopularity. DS, signed 'James R.,' one page, 11 x 9, May 8, 1622. Document instructing the Treasurer to pay fifty five pounds to John Prorate. In very good condition, with a fold through small portion of first letter of signature, scattered light toning and creasing, several small holes, and a worn partial seal. COA John Reznikoff/University Archives and RRAuction COA.
