He played in the stride tradition, and was a natural songwriter, as seen in such hits as Ain't Misbehavin and Keeping Out of Mischief Now. He died of pneumonia on his way to Kansas City from Los Angeles, while entertaining soldiers at training camps. Fountain pen signature, 'Thomas 'Fats' Waller,' on a yellow 5 x 3 slip.
