Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 1864-1873. Governor of Ohio (1855 - 59), he originated the national banking system and issued the first 'greenbacks' in 1863. ALS, written as Governor of Ohio, signed 'S. P. Chase,' two pages, 5.5 x 8, State Of Ohio letterhead, August 1, 1857. Chase reminisces about a visit to Annapolis. In part, 'I was truly delighted to see your children...How it freshens the heart to beat in unison with such young, pure natures!I wish I could have prolonged my visit but the Fates of Business and Politics are too inexorable...My friend Dr McMillan was quite captivated by...Miss Angelina...Do you think Miss Angelina is yet so fancy free that...my Surgeon General might venture to enter the list for her favor?'
