Description

Thelonious Monk album signed backstage after his last concert at Carnegie Hall

Jazz pianist, composer, and arranger; considered one of the most important, and eccentric, figures in modern jazz. He spent most of his life in New York City, playing in nightclubs; in the 1940s, he was one of the first players of bebop. His style is astringent, marked by discordant harmonies, alternating rhythms, and melodic interpretations. There is a subtle mixture of cynicism, humor, and warmth in his interpretations. The Thelonious Monk Orchestra at Town Hall album signed on the back cover in blue ballpoint, 'Thelonious Monk.' In fine condition, with a touch of light wear to covers. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from the original recipient of the signature, stating, 'Once I was backstage, I saw Monk standing alone...It took me a few minutes to finally get up the nerve...He smiled and shook my hand...He was a very gracious man...There were no other autograph seekers backstage at this show.' Also accompanied by a ticket stub from the show. The record is included. RRAuction COA.
