His masterpiece, Leaves of Grass, led to his dismissal from a job as a clerk in the US Department of Interior because of the book's reputed scandalously explicit sexual references. Unsigned mailing envelope, 6 x 3.25, addressed in Whitman's hand to 'Thomas Donaldson, 326 North 40th Street, Philadelphia.' There is a return address stamp in the lower left corner which reads, 'Walt Whitman, Camden, New Jersey.' In very good condition, with scattered toning and soiling, several notation and stamps lightly affecting address and mounting remnants to reverse.
