ALS signed 'Thad W. Markett,' two pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.75 x 12, March 18, 1862. Letter written by Second Lieutenant Thad Markett of Company 'F' (Water Valley Rifles) of the 15th Mississippi Infantry, to his sisters. In part, 'We never get anything good to eat, only when we draw molasses...and we mix it with our flour and make sweet cakes. That is very nice to a poor soldier that never sees anything but pickle beef and pork...There is a rumor in the camps that we will be sent back to Cumberland Gap. I have no confidence in the report for we never know where we are going or what we are going to do until we get there... I would not plant any cotton, or if I did it would be but very little. Plant corn and small grain on your place and let Pa work the Negroes until I get back.' In fine condition, with light toning, a bit heavier to folds and a few small holes at junctions of folds. The 15th saw action at the Battle of Mill Springs/Fishing Creek and Shiloh.
