The other, likely written when Roosevelt was about to leave office, in full: "My Dear Mrs. Dewey—The President wished to send his thanks to you and to the Admiral for the lovely basket of flowers, but I can't but add a few words of my own. A word of thanks too for the unfailing kindness you have shown to us, all these seven long busy years,—such kindness helps more than anything when one is trying to tread with some discretion a path which is set with more than an occasional thorn among the roses."
