Key figure in the labor movement (1850-1924) who founded the American Federation of Labor in 1886. Three items: a TLS, one page, 7.5 x 10.5, General Committee on the Limitation of Armament letterhead, February 8, 1922, addressed to William H. Short, in part: "I am hereby calling a full meeting of the Governing Board of the General Committee…on Monday, February 20…The purpose of the meeting is to consider what statement and what recommendations, if any, this General Committee should make to its speakers and to the people of the country in regard to the results and proposals of the Conference on the Limitation of Armament"; a vintage 7.5 x 10.75 magazine photo of Gompers in a bust-length pose, signed in the lower border in fountain pen, "For enlightenment & humanity, yours sincerely, Sam'l Gompers, 1921," affixed to a slightly larger mount; and a Washington Loan & Trust Company check, filled out in another hand and signed by Gompers, "Sam'l Gompers," payable to Waldo C. Moore for one cent, August 19, 1921. In overall very good to fine condition, with trimmed edges, and light creasing and wrinkling, to the magazine photo. In addition to being an avid numismatist and philatelist, Waldo C. Moore earned a reputation for his world-class collection of autographed checks. During his lifetime, the Ohioan banker sent hundreds of requests to celebrities, asking each to respond with a signed bank check for one cent.
