The offered 1956 Topps set comes complete with the requisite 342 cards, which includes both Checklist cards, that would comprise Topps’ 1956 offering to be considered complete. This set also includes 12 additional scarce team card variations qualifying it for “Master Set” status. At the time of this writing there were over 250 entrants to the “Basic” set and over 90 entrants to the “Master” set for the 1956 Topps issue on PSA’s Set Registry. This offered set is ranked #2 on both lists but also happens to be the highest ranked 100% complete set on both lists, both #1 sets are missing cards.
This offered set is comprised almost entirely of cards graded MINT 9 by PSA with few exceptions. Eight cards in this set have been graded GEM MINT 10 by PSA and they are as follows: 10 Warren Spahn, 34 Brewer, 87 Stone, 118 Nellie Fox, 174 Gorbous, 190 Carl Furillo, 194 Monte Irvin and 297 Skinner. Just five common cards (#’s 131, 159, 219, 258, and 339) that have been graded NM-MT 8 keep the “basic” set just shy of being all MINT 9’s or better. An additional eight team card variations have been graded NM-MT 8 and they are: 11 Cubs (name centered), 72 Phillies (name centered), 85 Indians (name left), 90 Redlegs (with date), 95 Braves (2; name center & with date) and 100 Orioles (2; name left & with date). With a staggering amount of the cards included being graded at the highest level PSA has graded the weighted GPA of the Basic Set is 9.48 and the Master Set is 9.44.
All too often the top tier sets are broken up and sold one card at a time and the complete set no longer exists. Without overstating the obvious, this is a “once in a lifetime” opportunity for collectors to bypass the decades it would take just to attempt such a lofty level of one of the hobby's a premier sets.
