Exceptionally early Pickett ordnance document from 1848
Description                           Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000

LS signed “G. E. Pickett, Bvt 1st Lt 8th Inf, Comg Co A,” one page, 7.5 x 9.5, November 21, 1848. Letter to Colonel George Talcott. In full: “I have the honour to transmit the returns of Ordnance & Ordnance Stores of Co ‘A.’ eight Infy for part of fourth Quarter 1848.” Elaborately cloth-matted and framed with descriptive plaques and a portrait to an overall size of 36 x 23. In fine condition. Oversized.

Having just recently graduated from West Point as the last-ranked student in the class of 1846, Pickett was sent south to participate in the Mexican-American War. Here he distinguished himself at the Battle of Chapultepec in September 1847 when he carried the American colors over the parapet to capture the Mexican fortress. He received a brevet promotion for his bravery and after the war was stationed at Jefferson Barracks for garrison duty. An exceptionally well-preserved example and one of the earliest Pickett autographs we have offered. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
