Description                           Estimate: $300+          

TLS signed “R. B. Taney,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, Treasury Department letterhead, April 10, 1834. Letter to Samuel Swartswout, the collector of customs in New York, in part: “Application having been made to me, by John Downes under date of the 7 instant to admit to entry Certain Merchandize mentioned in the enclosed Invoice, and imported from London in the Ship Sampson; and you having certified your opinion that no fraud was intended in the invoice, and there not appearing any just ground to suspect that a fraud upon the Revenue was intended, you are authorized and directed to admit the said merchandize to entry, in the same manner as if the invoice had been duly verified and authenticated.” In fine condition, with splitting along one of the horizontal folds. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
