“Boldly ventur’d to engage in maintaining our common rights, upon forming and supporting a Continental army”

Revolutionary War-era printed sermon, titled ‘Mr. Gordon's Sermon Preached before the House of Representatives July 19th, 1775,’ (Watertown: Benjamin Edes, 1775), 5.5 x 7.75, 37 pages. Content on revolutionary colonies and interesting commentary on the role of Jews in history. In small part: “Had not the wide Atlantic set us at so great a distance from Europe, and the American winds and seasons promised us their alliance…And had not the individuals of the Continental Congress regardless of threats and wrath like the roaring of lions, boldly ventur’d to engage in maintaining our common rights, upon forming and supporting a Continental army, and in appointing able Generals to command it.” William Gordon was the pastor of the Third Church in Roxbury. Scattered wrinkling and toning, and an owner’s signature to front cover, otherwise fine condition.
