Scarce early 1796 receipt for a book sale

Third-person ADS, one page, 8 x 4.25, docketed 1796 on the reverse. Harrison sends a group of books. In full: “Wm. H. Harrison sends to Colo. Gano seven setts of the Gleason viz 4 setts on wove & 3 on common paper—these are the property of the Colo. Mr. & Mse in anotherrs Goudy Mr. St. Clair Colo. Gibson & Mr. Gordon.” A receipt is penned on the reverse in another hand, listing the recipients and prices of the seven books totaling $23.00, and confirming receipt: “Received of John S. Gano the sum of Twenty three Dollars in full for the within mentioned books.” In very good condition, with three vertical folds (partial separation to center fold, not affecting any writing), light toning, and show-through from mounting remnants to reverse corners. A highly desirable example from early in Harrison’s military career. Among the notable men mentioned in this document is John Sites Gano, one of the original settlers of Columbia, Ohio, who arrived in 1788 and shortly thereafter commanded an advance party and surveyed the route for the march of General Arthur St. Clair’s army into the Indian country. The other surnames also appear on the rolls of Harrison’s troops as well as in early Ohio politics. An intriguing early piece of Ohio history. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
