Rare post-presidential scallop-topped ship’s pass
Description                           Estimate: $1,500 - $2,000

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 11.75 x 15, November 3, 1837. Scallop-topped ship’s pass issued for “the Ship Lancashire of New York, Thomas Alexander master or commander…mounted with no guns navigated with Twenty Two men to pass with her Company Passengers Goods and Merchandize without any hindrance seisure or molestation.” Crisply signed at the conclusion by President Jackson and countersigned by Secretary of State John Forsyth. The crisply embossed white paper seal affixed to the lower left remains intact. Intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), scattered soiling, a few tiny holes, and a couple stray ink blots, otherwise fine condition. Scallop-topped ship’s passes signed by Jackson are generally scarce and this is an especially interesting example as it was issued eight months after he left office. These were often left blank and signed in advance before being sent out to American ports, where they were filled out as needed. This supply of unissued documents was sometimes then drawn from even after a president left office. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
