Historic collection of three items, each signed by a distinguished Supreme Court justice, including: Bushrod Washington (DS), Benjamin Robbins Curtis (ALS), and Samuel Nelson (DS). In overall fine condition. Individual descriptions are as follows:

Bushrod Washington: Nephew of George Washington appointed to the Supreme Court by John Adams, where he served from 1798 until his death (1762–1829). Manuscript DS, signed “B. Washington,” one page, 7.5 x 2.5, Georgetown, May 8, 1826. Washington confirms receipt of a $17.25 payment for “6 Barrels Herrings.” In fine condition.

Benjamin Robbins Curtis: Supreme Court justice from 1851 to 1857, especially notable as one of the two dissents in the Dred Scott decision; as an attorney, he served as chief counsel for Andrew Johnson during his first impeachment trial (1809–1874). ALS signed “B. R. Curtis,” one page, 5 x 8, no date. Letter to C. H. Bull, Esq. In part: “The draft of the bill…seems to be correct. I doubt if Judge Parker will act. If I do not hear from him soon I shall think it certain he will not.” In fine condition.

Samuel Nelson: Supreme Court justice who served from 1845 to 1872 (1792–1873). Attractive vellum partly-printed DS, one page, 13 x 10.5, New York, October 13, 1840. Nelson confirms that Addison M. Burt is “admitted as an attorney in the Supreme Court of the State of New York.” Signed in the lower right by Nelson. Embossed paper seal and blue ribbon affixed to the left side remain crisp and fully intact. In fine condition. RR Auction COA.
