#8357 - Vince Lombardi's 1966 Brown Wool Topcoat Estimate: $15,000+

From Lombardi's personal wardrobe—a brilliant brown topcoat from 1966

Iconic brown wool topcoat personally-owned and -worn by legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi. The heavy camel hair single-breasted topcoat features three buttons, two flap pockets, notched lapels, and a light green silk interior lining. A pocket found on the inside of the right chest bears a haberdashery label for Art’s Custom Tailoring of Green Bay, Wisconsin, with interior of pocket featuring sewn-in “Amalgamated Clothing” and inventory labels, with the latter marked: “Tailored for: Name: Vince Lombardi, Date: 11/7/66, No. 94221.” In fine condition, with a few trivial instances of loose stitching. Accompanied by a letter of opinion from Mears Authentication.

The inventory label dates this topcoat to the bye-week for the 7-2 Green Bay Packers, a team that had lost a close home-game to the Minnesota Vikings only a day prior. The Packers rallied from that point on, winning the remaining five games of their schedule en route to a 34-27 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in the 1966 NFL Championship Game on January 1st. Two weeks later, the Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs squared off before 62,000 at at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on January 15, 1967. The first ever AFL-NFL World Championship match-up, later termed Super Bowl I, was won handily by Green Bay, with contest MVP Bart Starr tossing two touchdowns and leading the Packers to a final score of 35-10. This finely tailored topcoat, a key sartorial component of the great Packers coach, is further augmented by its close proximity to such an historic and significant period of the National Football League. An immensely rare, museum-quality keepsake from the personal wardrobe of a Green Bay icon.
