#485 - Jan Toorop Estimate: $2,000+

The major Dutch artist plans a priestly portrait

Dutch-Indonesian painter (1858-1928) who worked in various styles, including Symbolism and Art Noveau. ALS signed "J. Th. Toorop," one page, 5.25 x 8.25, April 14, 1913. Untranslated letter concerning arrangements for his portrait of the Flemish priest and author Hugo Verriest. In fine condition, with trivial toning to left edge. The board of the Amsterdam Catholic artist's society 'De Violier' commissioned Toorop to make the portrait of Verriest, who was especially notable for his political activism in the Flemish Movement. He was a major advocate for emancipation and greater autonomy of the Belgian region of Flanders, for protection of the Dutch language, and for the protection of Flemish culture and history.
