#2454 - U2 Typed Letter Signed Estimate: $7,000+

"We appreciate your efforts on behalf of 'The Joshua Tree'"
Phenomenal TLS signed “Bono," "David Evans," "Adam," and "Larry Mullen Jnr.,” one page, 8.25 x 11.75, U2 letterhead, October 27, 1987. Letter to Bob Catania, vice president of promotion at Island Records, in full: "We wanted to take this opportunity to tell you and Andy how much we appreciate your efforts on behalf of 'The Joshua Tree.' It's obvious that you have worked incredibly hard to make the album and singles the success they've been and done it all with great respect for us and what we're trying to do as a band. We're sorry not to be delivering this message in person, but we wanted to express our heart-felt thanks to you and your staff for your continued work on our behalf. Thank you, very, very much." In fine condition, with a couple creases to upper right. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from REAL.

The release of The Joshua Tree in March 1987 was met with near instantaneous success and acclaim. In the UK, the album became the fastest seller in British chart history when it earned a platinum certification within a mere 48 hours; some three weeks later, The Joshua Tree landed at the top of the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart and remained at that position for the next nine weeks. By May, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) officially certified the album as double-platinum. Catania and others at Island Records like founder Chris Blackwell did much to intensify the demand for U2 in record stores and across the airwaves. Their guidance and promotion for The Unforgettable Fire and the Wide Awake in America EP, in addition to the huge success of the band's hit single, 'Bad,' all but guaranteed that audiences the world over would be primed and ready for the release of The Joshua Tree. Written during the third leg of their massive The Joshua Tree Tour, this band-signed letter represents the exact period U2 evolved into the world's largest musical act—a tremendous offering made all the more desirable by the exceedingly rare presence of Edge's full given name.
