Description

"From one jailbird to another, Errol"

Vintage matte-finish 11 x 14 studio portrait photo of Errol Flynn wearing a suit and tie in a handsome bust-length pose, signed and inscribed in fountain pen to Warner Brothers' publicity man Robert Graham Wahn, "Hello Graham! From one jailbird to another, Errol.” In fine condition, with scattered small creases, primarily to the corners. In early December 1948, Flynn and Wahn were arrested between Madison Avenue and 62nd Street after an argument with NYC patrolmen who halted a taxi in which they were passengers. In the police station, Flynn allegedly kicked a policeman and was booked on an assault charge; Wahn was charged with disorderly conduct. The two were bailed out by the owner of New York's El Morocco nightclub. When Flynn overslept his hearing a day later, a warrant was issued for his arrest and the police found him at the Savoy Plaza Hotel. His excuse: ‘I did not get to sleep until 9 a.m. because of this trouble.’ When Flynn arrived at court, he told the press: ‘This is the worst public appearance I have ever made. [It’s] a gross misunderstanding…When I was grabbed by the lapels and pulled out of the cab I thought I was being charged with stealing it.’ The consignor notes that the photo originates from the family of former Warner Brothers publicity man Robert Graham Wahn, who worked public relations and acted as chaperone and sometime bodyguard to various stars in the 1940s and 1950s during their visits to New York City. Wahn archived many signed photographs and publicity stills throughout his tenure with Warner Brothers.
