Description

Bracket-bound DS, 48 pages, 8.5 x 11.25, November 1, 1958. Contract between Paramount Pictures and Clark Gable, who agrees to “act, play and perform the leading role in two (2) Class ‘A’ motion picture photoplays during the period of [3 years] commencing on January 1, 1959.” Signed at the conclusion in blue ballpoint by Gable. A supplemental contract brief notes that the first photoplay is entitled ‘It Started in Naples.’ Housed in its original file folder with the tab also listing the film name. Includes two drafts of the contract brief as well as correspondence related to Gable’s compensation for Teacher's Pet, It Started in Naples, and But Not for Me. In fine condition, with staining only to the spine of its file folder. A fascinating contract that offers insight into Gable's power and influence as a top Hollywood actor—from wages and set times to leading ladies and directors, all had to be approved by Gable.

Released by Paramount Pictures on August 7, 1960, It Started in Naples was a romantic comedy set in Italy that featured Clark Gable and Sophia Loren in the lead roles—it was Gable's final film to be released within his lifetime and his last film in color. He died of a heart attack on November 16th, a few months before the release of his final film, The Misfits.
