Small 1″ x .5″ swatch of the aluminum-coated fabric skin of the LZ 129 Hindenburg, which caught fire when it attempted to dock with its mooring mast at Naval Air Station Lakehurst in Manchester Township, New Jersey on May 6, 1937. The fragment was cut from a larger piece recovered by Frederick J. 'Bull' Tobin (1892-1978), a chief boatswain who was managing the mooring lines at Lakehurst when disaster struck. Tobin became famous for ordering the fleeing ground crew back to their poses in order to assist the survivors. Accompanied by a color photocopy of the larger Hindenburg fragment (from which this was cut) and a color copy of the envelope with provenance note stating that the piece was obtained from Tobin.
