Description

Scarce 1936 MGM document from James Stewart's first year in Hollywood—listing Henry Fonda as his emergency contact

DS, one page, 8.25 x 11, July 23, 1936. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Corporation personnel record filled out in type with Stewart's personal details, including his address ("233 No. Carmelina, Brentwood, Los Angeles, Calif."), date of birth ("May 20, 1908"), education ("Princeton University"), health ("Excellent"), religion ("Protestant"), and emergency contact info ("Henry Fonda," at the same address). Nicely signed at the conclusion in fountain pen by Stewart. In fine condition.

Stewart met Henry Fonda while performing with the University Players in Cape Cod during the summer of 1932, and the two became lifelong friends. They both struck off to New York shortly thereafter and roomed together while honing their skills on Broadway. They fared no better than many Americans in and out of work during the Great Depression, sometimes lacking enough money to take the subway. The two caught their 'big breaks' at around the same time, and again found each other as roommates in Hollywood. Stewart signed a seven-year contract with MGM in 1935, and made his debut as a leading man in the 1936 film Next Time We Love—ironically, opposite Henry Fonda's ex-wife, Margaret Sullavan. A great, early document heralding the prolific career of a Hollywood icon.
