Official matte-finish 10 x 9.25 Harris & Ewing portrait of the Vinson Court, signed in the lower border in ink and fountain pen by all nine pictured Supreme Court justices: Hugo Black, Stanley Reed, Felix Frankfurter, William O. Douglas, Harold H. Burton, Robert H. Jackson, Fred M. Vinson, Frank Murphy, and Wiley Blount Rutledge. Matted and framed to an overall size of 15. 5 x 14.5. In fine condition.
The Vinson Court served from 1946 to 1953, a relatively short period of time. Its term coincided with the House Un-American Activities investigation of the movie industry and the subsequent blacklisting of many notable writers, the witch hunts of Senator Joe McCarthy, and a nationwide fear of Communists. The court wrestled with labor unions (United States v. United Mine Workers), communism (dealing with the conviction of the Rosenbergs), loyalty oaths, and racial segregation.
