The sixth vice president of the United States under James Madison, who also served as the fourth governor of New York (1774-1825). ALS, one page, 8 x 9.75, May 10, 1814. Handwritten letter of recommendation to William Jones, in full: "Mr. Samuel Hunt of the City of New York has been so highly & satisfactorily recommended to one that I take the liberty of soliciting his appointment to the command of one of the Gunboats in this Harbour. He is an experienced mariner, sustains a good moral & political character & is in the prime of life, being 26 years old." In very good to fine condition, with light toning and a few small edge tears.
