Description

Contemporary editorial coverage of the 1804 Burr-Hamilton duel in the New-York Herald

Complete issue of the New-York Herald from August 18, 1804, 13.5 x 19.25, four pages, with great content on the July 11th duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr—the culmination of their bitter rivalry that resulted in Hamilton's death. The duel was the subject of much debate, and the paper features several columns and editorials on the subject: some of political nature, both defending and in opposition to Colonel Burr, and quoting some of the noteworthy correspondence between the two. One article points out the accommodations made to Burr by Gen. George Washington for his service as an officer in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Other interesting articles include: commentary on the influence of the state of Virginia under the Jefferson administration; reportage of Jerome Bonaparte's arrival at Baltimore; the state of American commerce on the high sea; and comparisons between the state of government in the United States and Europe. In fine condition, with some scattered foxing.
