Description

Oversized portrait of Disney and his dog Lady, inscribed to the studio's gardener

Large vintage matte-finish 11 x 14 photo of Disney holding a book and posing with his adorable miniature poodle, Lady, prominently signed and inscribed in black ink, "To Fred Schlatter, all best wishes, Walt Disney.” Permanently mounted and double-matted to an overall size of 16 x 20. In fine condition, with a small surface gouge to the background area above the dog.

Lady sometimes appeared with Disney in the introductions of his weekly television show, from which this image was undoubtedly taken. According to Disney: 'Before Lady, we owned a large sized standard poodle and I used to think she was the only female in my family that really understood me. [Lady's] small but she's easy on the brick and brack. Round the house, she is a personality in her own right.'

The recipient, Fred Schlatter, was the gardener for Walt Disney Studios, whose name appeared in the first issue of The Bulletin (January 6, 1939), an in-house Disney company newspaper that explained Schlatter's amazing ability to concoct gags for the Donald Duck strip.
