Description

"I proved to him, while talking about the Battle of Austerlitz, that he did not know what he was saying, at least in the field of modern history"

Swiss officer and influential military theorist (1779-1869) who served as a general in the French and Russian armies and was one of the most celebrated writers on the Napoleonic art of war. ALS in French, signed "General Jomini," one page both sides, 5.25 x 8, postmarked December 17, 1840. Letter to Mr. Coquerel. In part (translated): "I apologize for all the extravagant words that Mr. [crossed out] poured on you yesterday; Valerie's illness and the reason behind our meeting in addition to my own indisposition have stopped me from silencing him with an arrogance commensurate to his own. He is righteous, stubborn, and prone to hairsplitting…I proved to him, while talking about the Battle of Austerlitz, that he did not know what he was saying, at least in the field of modern history. If I had gone beyond that, it would have caused a deplorable scene, because, while I am less impetuous, I am more easily carried away. Forgive him on account of the good qualities which he has." In fine condition.
