World War II-era astro-compass as used in all long-range bombers, in its original case measuring 9.75″ x 4.75″ x 6″. The label on the base identifies the manufacturer as The W. W. Boes Co., and the unit as: "Compass-Astro, AN5738-1, Mfr's Part No. XCD-94, Contract No. W535 AC-36491." The case bears a matching label on the lid, and contains an installation instructions diagram and inspection tag dated 1952. Utilized for navigation at high altitudes, the astro-compass indicates true north when pointed at a known star. In fine condition, with part of the plastic stand inside the case cracked.
