Bank of Commerce check, 6.75 x 2.5, filled out and signed by Lee, "R. E. Lee, On Apl. Fort Hamilton Capt. Engrs.," payable to Daniel Severt for $24.80, August 31, 1841. In very good to fine condition, with several vertical folds, old adhesive residue on the back, and a tear (and associated small hole) to a blank area, affecting none of the handwriting. Accompanied by three images of Lee.
Before he rose to the prominent position of commander of the Confederate Army during the Civil War, Lee, a West Point graduate, had served in the US Army Corps of Engineers. Lee was transferred to Fort Hamilton, in New York Harbor, in 1841 to supervise improvements in its fortifications.
