Curie politely declines to attend a "banquet marking the centenary of the 'Royal Society of Surgery and Medicine'"

French physicist (1859-1906) best known for his pioneering investigation of radioactivity, who shared the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics with his wife, Marie Curie. ALS in French, signed “P. Curie,” one page, 5 x 8, Faculte de Sciences de Paris letterhead, April 7, 1905. Letter to the secretary of the Royal Society of Surgery and Medicine, in full (translated): "It will not be possible for me to attend the banquet marking the centenary of the 'Royal Society of Surgery and Medicine.'—I beg you to transmit my excuses to the president and members of the Society.—I thank them very sincerely for the honor that they have done me by inviting me to this anniversary banquet. I beg you to accept, Monsieur Secretary, my most sincere salutations." Handsomely double-matted and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 16 x 13.5. In fine condition.
