Description

TLS signed “Winston S. Churchill,” one page, 7.5 x 9.5, Hyde Park Gate letterhead, May 2, 1951. Letter to editor and publisher Desmond Flower, in full: "Thank you so much for your letter of April 26 and for sending me your cheque in respect of the new book of speeches, and the counterpart agreement, which I am glad to have. When do you think you will be able to publish?" In fine condition, with secretarial notations to lower left. Accompanied by Flowers's response letter, dated May 11th, which notes: "We are still waiting for Randolph's foreword and cannot prize it out of him. We will publish within 2 months of his giving us that last bit of copy and passing the proofs for press."

Desmond Flower (1907-1997) was the longtime editor and director at London's Cassell & Co., a publishing house that released numerous collected speeches by Churchill, in addition to two of his most enduring works: the six-volume The Second World War, and the four-volume A History of the English-Speaking Peoples. The work referenced here is likely In the Balance: Speeches 1949 and 1950, one of several speech books edited by his son Randolph Churchill, who also contributed its preface.
