Description

The elusive Elizabethan poet makes a payment on a debt

English poet (1543–1607) who served as a courtier to Elizabeth I and who produced body of verse that, though popular in his own day, is now largely lost. Uncommmon manuscript DS, one page, 8 x 6, May 15, 1599. A receipt for the partial repayment of a debt. Dyer identifies himself as a resident of Somerset County and affirms the fact that he owes Edward Stanhope “five hundred poundes of … lawful money,” and makes a payment of ten pounds against the debt. Countersigned by two witnesses. Autograph material of Dyer is quite scarce. In fine condition, with a few faint spots and light show-through from ink docket on reverse, no faults affecting the clean, dark signature. LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
