Description

Browning pens an excerpt of Cleon for his editor

English poet who perfected the dramatic monologue in such works as My Last Duchess and Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister. AQS, one page, 4.5 x 6.25, dated June 15, 1884. Browning pens a quote from Cleon for his editor, Edward W. Bok. Quote reads, in full, “ We of these latter days, with greater mind Than our forerunners since more composite, Look not so great, beside their simple way, To a judge who only sees one way at once, One mind-point and no other at a time, -- Compares the small part of a man of us, With some whole man of the heroic age, Great in his way -- not ours, nor meant for ours --And ours is greater, had we skill to know.” Signed at the conclusion “From ‘Cleon’ Transcribed for Edward W. Bok by Robert Browning.” Double matted and framed with a portrait of Browning and a plaque bearing a transcription of the quote, to an overall size of 15.5 x 14.25. In fine condition. R&R COA.
