Description

Election results, signed by Louis XVI five months before the birth of the French Revolution

King of France (1774–1792). In 1789 he summoned the Estates-General, but he did not grant the reforms that were demanded and revolution followed. Louis and his queen, Marie Antoinette, were executed in 1793. Extremely rare DS, in French, two pages both sides, 8 x 12.5, January 30,1879. Rare and unusual document detailing election results, in French, signed on the reverse of the second page. In fine condition, with expected toning. Quite rare and unusual. In 1789, Louis ordered the first election of the Estates-General since 1614 in order to have the monetary reforms approved. The election was one of the events that transformed the general malaise into the French Revolution, which began in June 1789. The Third Estate had declared itself the National Assembly; Louis' attempts to control it resulted in the Tennis Court Oath (serment du jeu de paume, June 20), the declaration of the National Constituent Assembly on July 9, and the storming of the Bastille on July 14. In October, the royal family was forced to move from the Palace of Versailles to the Tuileries Palace in Paris. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
